Every Nkuringo trek begins with a briefing at the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) post, usually early in the morning. From there, guests are grouped by gorilla family and set off for the trailhead.
Staying within walking distance of that briefing point removes one of the more stressful parts of a trekking morning: an early transfer on narrow, unpaved mountain roads while it’s still dark or misty. It also means you’re not watching the clock on a drive before the hike has even started — useful on a trek that’s already going to ask a lot of your legs.
Orugano Bwindi Lodge: About a 10-Minute Walk to the Gate
Orugano Bwindi Lodge sits just outside the national park boundary in Nkuringo, about a 10-minute walk from the UWA briefing point. Guests can have breakfast at a normal pace, walk to the briefing, and start the trek without needing a vehicle transfer beforehand.
Nkuringo Gorilla Trekking
Nkuringo treks are rewarded with some of the most dramatic scenery in Bwindi — the sector sits at higher elevation than Buhoma or Rushaga, with views over the forest canopy toward the Virungas. That view comes with real physical demands: expect steep ascents and descents, and be prepared for the trek to run longer if your assigned gorilla family has moved further into the forest overnight.
Trackers locate each family before groups set out, so sightings are highly reliable — around 99% — though never guaranteed, since these are wild gorillas in a national park, not a managed reserve. A standard permit buys one hour with the gorillas once you reach them, and the Uganda Wildlife Authority sets a minimum age of 15 for gorilla trekking permits.
Can You Trek Rushaga While Staying in Nkuringo?
Yes. Rushaga is approximately 40–45 minutes’ drive from Orugano Bwindi Lodge, depending on road and weather conditions, so basing yourself in Nkuringo doesn’t lock you into Nkuringo treks only. It’s a common combination for guests who want to experience both sectors, or who specifically want the gorilla habituation experience, which is based in Rushaga.
Gorilla Habituation in Rushaga
Gorilla habituation is a different experience from a standard trek: instead of one hour with a fully habituated family, permit holders spend up to four hours observing a family that’s still becoming accustomed to human presence, alongside the researchers and trackers doing that work. It’s a more limited, higher-cost permit than standard trekking, and it’s based in the Rushaga sector.
Staying at Orugano keeps you close enough to Rushaga (approximately 40–45 minutes, depending on road and weather conditions) to do the habituation experience while still basing the rest of your stay in Nkuringo, rather than switching lodges mid-trip. Coming from Kigali
Kigali, Rwanda, is often the fastest gateway to southern Bwindi — though it isn’t automatically the best gateway for every Uganda safari, and travellers building a longer, multi-region Uganda itinerary may find Entebbe a better starting point. For a Nkuringo-focused trip, though, Kigali is generally the more convenient option: it’s roughly a 4–5 hour drive from Kigali to Nkuringo.

Most guests book two nights — enough for an arrive, trek, depart itinerary. With three nights, there’s time to see more of Nkuringo: village and forest walks, Lake Mutanda, golden monkey trekking in Mgahinga, or simply an unhurried afternoon looking out over the Virungas. If you’re also doing gorilla habituation in Rushaga, it’s worth planning an extra night to allow for the additional permit day.
