If your permit is specifically for the Rushaga sector — whether a standard trek or the gorilla habituation experience — you don’t have to base yourself in Rushaga to do it. Plenty of guests trek in Rushaga while staying in Nkuringo, using the roughly 40–45 minute drive between the two as part of a normal trekking morning.
That said, Rushaga has its own cluster of lodges close to its own briefing point, and staying there does remove that drive entirely — worth considering if you’re trekking in Rushaga only, or if minimising any morning transfer matters more to you than anything else. Coming from Kigali
Kigali, Rwanda, is often the fastest gateway to southern Bwindi — though it isn’t automatically the best gateway for every Uganda safari, and travellers building a longer, multi-region Uganda itinerary may find Entebbe a better starting point. For a Nkuringo-focused trip, though, Kigali is generally the more convenient option: it’s roughly a 4–5 hour drive from Kigali to Nkuringo.
