Ivy River Trail

The Ivy River Trail is one of the best ways to explore the breathtakingly beautiful Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park, home to half of the world’s mountain gorillas. This 13 km walk takes you through thick jungle, along a lovely river, and deep into one of Uganda’s most beautiful wild places.

The trail starts at Nkuringo Gate and goes downhill into the green, misty forest. The first part can be tough — the path is steep, muddy, and sometimes overgrown — but it’s also full of adventure. Once you reach the Ivy River Bridge, the trail becomes easier, and you can slow down to enjoy the view. Listen to the sounds of birds, insects, and monkeys, and breathe in the fresh forest air.

If you’re lucky, you might even see a mountain gorilla along the way — the true king of this jungle! The hike ends at Buhoma, another part of Bwindi where gorilla trekking begins. This trail was once used by local people, but now it’s open to visitors who want to walk through the forest with a local guide. Along the way, you’ll see beautiful plants, animals, and local villages. You can hike from Buhoma to Nkuringo or the other way around — and it’s also a great route if you’re traveling to or from Queen Elizabeth National Park. The Ivy River Trail is perfect for anyone who loves nature, walking, and peaceful moments in the wild. It’s a journey full of sights, sounds, and surprises — a true adventure in Uganda’s magical mountain forest.

Walking the Ivy River Trail

This rewarding 4–6-hour trek offers two routes: a scenic loop back to Nkuringo or a full crossing to Buhoma. Along the way, you will pause at breathtaking viewpoints where mist drifts over emerald treetops and valleys unfold toward distant ridges.

Your guide enrich the journey with stories of the forest, pointing out medicinal plants, towering trees, and subtle signs of wildlife that many would otherwise miss. Ideal for travellers seeking a quieter, more immersive experience, the Ivy River Trail combines moderate hiking with spectacular scenery and an intimate connection to the untamed beauty of the Bwindi wilderness.

Wildlife And Nature

Walking the Ivy River Trail is a wonderful way to explore the animals of Bwindi. Black-and-white colobus monkeys jump from tree to tree above you, and small duikers move quietly through the bushes.

If you are lucky, you might even see a bush pig along the path. Bird lovers will be amazed — more than 350 kinds of birds live in this area, including special ones found only in the Albertine Rift, like the African green broadbill and the blue-headed sunbird. The forest is full of birdsong, and the quiet moments between calls make every sighting feel special. With binoculars ready, visitors can enjoy peaceful moments of discovery in a forest full of life and colour.

Culture

The Ivy River Trail has been used by local people for generations. Long ago, it was an important path linking villages for trade and market days.

Today, walkers still pass small farms and homesteads along the way, where life continues much as it has for decades. Travellers can see everyday village life, meet friendly locals, and learn about the traditions and stories that make this part of Bwindi so special.
